Our Methods
The ADD Centre uses an educational skills training approach that uses neurofeedback and biofeedback training that is proven effective to help people with ADD/ADHD learn to focus, concentrate, to control impulsive and hyperactive behaviours and remove the need for medication. The training makes our students confident and motivated to reach their potential and achieve success.
First Step: Assessment
Accurate reporting of the student's level of concentration versus their peers.
No more guessing. At The ADD Centre we can help answer your questions about how you or your child is paying attention. Our comprehensive assessment will show us how the students levels of concentration compares to the their peers. We uncover the areas where students require help and design an individualized training program to help improve those areas with methods that get results.
Where academic difficulties are identified an academic assessment is done to determine the student’s level compared to the Manitoba Curriculum standards for their age and grade.
Second Step: Develop a training plan
A individualized plan tailored to our students needs.
We create a unique training plan for each of our students. Not everyone is alike, so we tailor the training program to student’s needs. As our student progresses through their training program, adjustments are made as required to keep the student challenged, motivated and on track to see results.
Third Step: Training
The best trainers utilizing the best technology
At the ADD Centre we blend our one on one instruction with the latest in neurofeedback technology. The student begins learning how to control their concentration with real time feedback displayed on the computer. Over a series of 1 hour sessions, the student learns the feeling of what it's like to be focused to strengthen the brain by taking advantage of neuroplasticity.
Imagine the process as going to the gym, but to exercise your brain. This educational approach takes advantage of how we learn other skills like riding a bike. You practice until “you get it” and can do it without conscious control. As the training progresses the student consciously reinforces the effect of the training all the while teaching their brain to avoid distraction and staying on task as an unconscious skill. Once the skill is learned then it becomes available for reading, listening, performing during sports and music.
Fourth Step: Application, at school, home or at work
Creating results and motivating our students
Our programs are constantly measuring the student’s progress during each minute of the lesson. At the end of the lesson progress is compared to previous sessions and to where the student is compared to their end goal. During each 1 hour session we are working on skills that they can take into the real world. Each student learns relaxation and alertness skills that can help them perform at their peak levels even in the face of stress or adversity.
Coupled with real-time biofeedback technology these skills become a part of their performance capability that can be called upon whenever they feel the need to refocus or stay on task. We also work with our students on reading, problem solving and listening skills so they can see how well they focus when for example a teacher is instructing a class or during an exam. A re-evaluation is done after 20 sessions to measure progress. At completion or training each student is re-assessed to ensure that they meet the completion criteria for their age.
The Results
The results of our training program are improved attention, concentration and behavior and increases academic performance. For many children there is a decreased need for use of stimulant medication. We are inspired by our students’ results and positive changes in the quality of life for them and their families.
